Make Looping Bows & Pinwheel Hair Bows

Layering looped bows also creates a beautiful child's hair bow.

Accessorize the little girl in your life's hair with homemade pinwheel hair bows. These cute, simple-to-make hair bows can be customized to match outfits, express a girl's favorite colors or add cute accessories to a hair style. Making bows at home is a wonderful way for moms to provide their little girls with a homemade gift. Consider helping girls choose ribbons at the craft store and make personalized gifts for their friends.

Instructions

Simple Pinwheel Bow

1. Cut a piece of 1 ½ inch grosgrain ribbon about 23 inches long. Make a loop using about ¼ of the ribbon with the longer tail being on top of the loop.

2. Pinch the loop in one hand and bring the long tail up and back to create a second loop on top of the first loop.

3. Bring the tail up from the bottom of the second loop. Pinch both the loops together in the center. Practice pinching the loops together to create a neat bow with loops on all four sides.

4. Wind craft wire around the center of the bow to hold it in place. Use wire cutters to trim away any excess wire.

5. Trim the loose ends of the pinwheel ribbon so they are the same length. Run a lighter quickly over the ends to seal them and prevent them from fraying.

Looped Layer Ribbon

6. Cut a length of 3/8 inch grosgrain ribbon about 23 inches long. Run a lighter over the ends so they do not fray. Make a loop slightly smaller than the loops of the pinwheel ribbon. For example, if the loops of the pinwheel ribbon are 2 inches long, make the loops of this ribbon 1 1/2 inches long. The second ribbon should fit easily on top of the pinwheel ribbon, so that the bottom ribbon is still visible. Secure the loop with hot glue.

7. Create a second loop and secure it with a small dot of hot glue. Repeat this process two more times until the 3/8 inch ribbon has four loops like the pinwheel ribbon.

8. Trim off the tail and run the lighter over the edge to prevent fraying. Secure the end with a final drop of hot glue.

9. Repeat steps 1 through 3 with the ric-rac. Layer the 3/8 inch ribbon over the pinwheel ribbon. Layer the ric-rac ribbon on top. Wind wire over the center of all three ribbons to secure them together. Clip away any excess wire.

10. Turn the layered, looped pinwheel ribbon bow over. Take the hair clip and secure it to the center of the back of the ribbon bow using hot glue. Allow everything to dry before clipping the bow into a child's hair.
