Even flimsy satin and organza ribbon can be hardened with fabric starch.
To create a perfectly formed hair bow, you need to start with a stiffer type of ribbon. Most of the stiffer ribbons, however, contain wires. Wired ribbons are not ideal for hair bows because they can scratch your head or the hand of the person putting the bow in. Instead of risking injury with wired ribbons, harden the ribbon yourself. Chances are, you already have the necessary product---clothing starch---in your home.
Instructions
1. Lay the ribbon across an ironing board. Ensure that the ribbon is perfectly flat.
2. Spray a light layer of clothing starch over the top of the ribbon.
3. Run the hot iron across the starched ribbon.
4. Turn the ribbon over and apply another light layer of starch. Again, iron the ribbon.
5. Repeat Steps 2 through 4 until the ribbon has reached your desired hardness. Form the ribbon into a bow.
6. Spray the bow one last time with starch so it keeps its shape until washed.
