Make Crafts Utilizing A 1/8 Dowel Fishing rod

Make Crafts Using a 1/8 Dowel Rod

Dowel rods are versatile craft materials for making models, structures and many other projects. Wooden dowel rods are available in a range of sizes, beginning at 1/8 inch in diameter. These thin wooden rods may be painted, stained and combined with other lightweight craft materials to make projects such as a foam flower bouquet, a flag and a flagpole or holiday decorations. Look for 1/8 dowel rods at local craft and discount stores.

Instructions

1. Spray paint seven 1/8-inch dowel rods green. Let the paint dry. The dowel rods are the stems for the foam flowers; paint one dowel for each flower. Small dowels are often sold in 12-inch pre-cut lengths. If you have a longer dowel, cut it into 12-inch increments.

2. Trace the outline of the flower template onto a foam sheet. Select any type of flower, or flowers, for this craft project. Cut out the flower design. Make seven foam flower cutouts for the bouquet.

3. Place the foam flowers face down on a flat work surface. Add glue to the center of one flower. Press at least 2 inches of one end of a 1/8-inch dowel rod into the glue. Glue a dowel rod to each foam flower. Let the glue dry.

4. Trace two leaf outlines for every foam flower onto a sheet of green foam. Cut the leaves from the foam. Glue one leaf onto either side of each 1/8-inch dowel rod, several inches below the foam flowers. Let the glue dry.

5. Make the yellow pipe cleaners into spirals to fit in the center of any five-petal flowers. Glue the yellow spiral onto the center of the flowers. If your flowers are tulips, daffodils or other types with no center, ignore this step.

6. Place the floral foam block into the basket. Insert the open end of each 1/8-inch dowel into the floral foam to create the flower bouquet.

7. Camouflage the top of the floral foam with colorful stones.
