Make Large Bows From Ribbon

Make big bows out of ribbon and use them to adorn a variety of projects.

There are a variety of styles for big bows, and once you get the hang of making one you can experiment with more. Use ribbon bows to make hair accessories, gift toppers or floral accents. Tie the bows around your house for holiday decorations or attach them to a wreath for your next craft project. Elaborate ribbon bows can be expensive to purchase, but if you learn to make your own, you can cut your costs significantly. Use these instructions to make bows out of paper or fabric ribbon.

Instructions

1. Cut a 10-inch length of ribbon and loop it to make an oval with the ends meeting in the middle. Repeat this with an 8-inch, 6-inch, and 4-inch length of ribbon.

2. Layer the ribbon loops on top of one another, graduating in size so that the 4-inch ribbon loop is on top and the 10-inch ribbon loop is on the bottom. Line them up evenly on top of one another and pinch the center to secure the loops, then staple through all of the layers to secure them together. If you are working with thicker fabric ribbon you may need to sew a few stitches with a needle and thread instead of using a stapler.

3. Cut a flat length of ribbon to make a tail for your bow; it should be approximately 1 inch longer than the length of your 10-inch ribbon loop. Place this underneath your layered loops and secure with another stitch or staple.

4. Make a small loop of ribbon, long enough to go around the short midsection of your stacked loops and cover your staples or stitches. Use craft glue or a glue gun to secure the ends of this piece of ribbon underneath your layered loops; this loop becomes the center of your bow.

5. Use scissors to cut a triangle out of the center edge of each end of your bottom layer of ribbon; this will make pointed ends for your ribbon. Use clear nail polish or no-fray glue to paint the edges and keep the ribbon from fraying.
