Make Korker Bow Hair Ties

Ribbons are easily curled into korker hair ties.

Making korker bow hair ties is a pleasant crafting activity for moms and young daughters. Plus, when you're finished, you've made cute, brightly colored hair ties that can be worn in little girls' hair. Korker hair ties are made of ribbons tightly curled into a corkscrew pattern. All you need are some ribbons, household items and a little time to make the popular and adorable hair accessory.

Instructions

1. Buy rolls of grosgrain ribbon at the crafts or sewing store. Grosgrain ribbon is finely woven and stiff with small, upraised ribs running across it. Substitute any polyester fabric ribbon such as woven, organza or satin. Select ribbon 1/8- to 3/8-inches wide. Get a wide variety of textures and colors. Coordinate the hues for harmonious color schemes. Match red with pink and white, or use red, white and blue ribbons. Use ribbons in different shades of the same color.

2. Get some 1/4- or 5/16-inch wooden dowel rods at the hardware or crafts store. They can be any length as long as they fit in your oven. Secure one end of the ribbon to the dowel rod end with a small clothespin. Tightly coil the ribbon around the dowel rod. Clip the other end of the ribbon to the rod with another clothespin. Keep the tension uniformly distributed through the length of the ribbon.

3. Vary how tightly you wrap the ribbon for looser or tighter curls in your hair tie. Cover the center oven rack with aluminum foil or use a foil-covered cookie pan placed on the rack. Preheat the oven to 275 F. Spray the corker ribbons with fabric stiffener. Place the ribbon-covered dowels in the oven and bake for 15 to 25 minutes. Remove a ribbon from a dowel and check to see if it retains its tightly coiled shape. If not, bake for another 5 minutes.

4. Take a pair of scissors and cut the ribbon into 2- to 4-inch lengths. Cut longer pieces for bigger bows. Cut the ribbons all the same length for each bow. Seal the ends of the ribbons with a non-staining liquid sealant such as Fray Check or clear nail polish. Arrange 8 to 10 bows by color and stack them up in a pile over a piece of flat ribbon or sturdy string.

5. Lift the ends of the string over the ribbon pile and tightly tie a double knot to hold the korker bow together. Even out the korker, pulling on the opposite end of a ribbon sticking out too far, or just trim it with the scissors. Turn the korker around and adjust the ribbon lengths until it's symmetrical. Hot glue the korker to a metal alligator hair clip or barrette.
