Diy Flower Hair Add-ons

Whether you want real-looking flowers or colorful stylized flowers in your hair, you can make your own flower hair accessories with some DIY know-how and the right materials. Use crepe paper and a quick-hardening resin for pretty barrettes, make the quickest flower pins ever with silk flower buds and hot glue, or create a formal floral headband or tiara with fresh blooms.

Barrettes

Try Martha Stewart's flower barrettes, which use crepe paper cut in petal shapes, alternating hearts and teardrops to make a lifelike yet inexpensive floral craft. Wire the petals together, using a toothpick to help them curl. Using a bamboo skewer, dip the flower into an easy-hardening resin cast mixture and let it dry, then spray with matte finish and wire it onto a barrette. You can also attach it to any other object, such as a headband or brooch.

Pins and Clips

Make either permanent or interchangeable pins and clips with flowers on them. Try either hot-gluing silk flowers to a clip or wiring them to a bobby pin. For an interchangeable flower hair clip, use a pretty brad to make the center of the flower and cut out felt or fabric petals. (You also can find plastic or vinyl flowers in craft or scrapbooking supply stores.) The brad folds around a clip, and can be as easily unfolded to change the look. Yet another method for a vintage look: Flatten out a silk flower with an iron and glue rhinestones, sequins or jewel-look craft stones on the petals and center. A toothpick is the best method for applying tiny dots of glue. Wrap the pin or clip in a matching ribbon and glue the flower to the ribbon.

Headbands or Tiaras

Create a headband or tiara from fresh or silk flowers. First make a corsage-type arrangement with floral tape, flowers and foliage. Wrap the stems of fresh or silk flowers in the tape and trim the stems to fit. Heavy flowers may need some craft wire poked from the stem to their head to support them. Then, if using fresh flowers, attach them with wire to the headband or tiara, and wrap the remaining wire around the hairpiece. Silk or dried flowers can be wired or hot-glued to the headband. You can use several different sizes or colors of flowers to add more in the same way. This method can also be used to build barrettes and combs, although a pin may not provide enough surface area.
