Earn Money At Craft Festivals

Know the cost of your product so you don't mark it too low.

Your friends and relatives may be encouraging you to sell your arts and crafts at craft fairs. While this could be a way to make money off your work, like any business, it requires advanced knowledge and planning.

Instructions

1. Scope out the competition. Check out a few local craft fairs before deciding whether to go that route for selling your crafts. Make sure the items you're selling don't have too much competition. If you have to lower your prices too much to sell items, you aren't going to make much money. Handmade items aren't practical to mass produce, so markup is key when it comes to craft fairs.

2. Locate where and when craft fairs are held and the costs involved. Some craft fairs can be expensive to participate in. Do an online search for craft fair communities. Vendors and fair organizers often post information to these sites. Also, find out what the requirements are for each fair. This could include licensing, sales tax and specific requirements for tents. Find out about local ordnances you might need to comply with as well as collecting state and local taxes.

3. Estimate your start-up costs. Renting a craft fair booth can run as much as $550 notes successful crafter Terry Spear on the Entrepreneur website. You also will need a way to transport items to and from the fair--don't underestimate the size of what you're taking with you. Make sure your car can hold everything. At the very least, your start up costs will include a few tables, a tent, a chair, a cash box, a fire extinguisher and your goods.

4. Expect the unexpected and unforeseen circumstances. To make money, you are going to have to give up family time on summer weekends and possibly arrange for childcare during those times. Most people don't make a living doing fairs, and if they do, it's because they are extremely driven, have unique products, are willing to travel around the country and have the necessary startup costs.
