Valentine originated as a Latin word meaning strong, and nothing more aptly describes a mother's love. That's why making heartfelt Valentine's Day gifts with your preschool kids will not only be memorable, but provide excellent keepsakes. During the holiday, plenty of stores are stocked full of gifts; nevertheless, creating a unique gift at home will add the best personal touch. Children love being creative, especially when it comes to making messes. However, there a numerous projects you can work on at home that won't leave you cleaning up for hours.
Choose the Right Craft Making Space
Choose a room in your home that can be easily childproofed before the big project. If the weather is agreeable, an outdoors craft session is the optimal choice. Even if you project does not involve any paint, glue or glitter, it is wise to lay down a drop cloth on not only the floor but nearby furniture. Take an inventory around your home to find materials. Crayons, scrap fabric, Popsicle sticks and paper can be found anywhere. Ask your kids who they would like to make a valentine for and suggest ideas. Many children choose parents and pets, but making valentines for teachers can show how much they are appreciated.
Planning
Cutting all materials will help eliminate any accidents. A simple project involves fabricating a valentine using thick paper such as construction or a paper plate. A plate lends itself to becoming either a portrait of the child or of the recipient. Let your child have enough space to be creative with pens, markers or crayons. Give him some options for embellishments such as cotton balls, yarn, ribbons or beads. These simple materials can be transformed to resemble hair, jewelry, hair bows, or hats for the portrait. Be sure to either supervise the gluing or step in and glue his choice objects on the valentine. If it is for a family member, have him include a theme of individual's favorite activities or hobbies. For example, if his grandmother loves skiing, see if he would like to incorporate mountains made with chocolate kisses wrappers or glittery snowflakes. Using atypical elements in the valentine will allow children to be more creative.
Abandon the Usual Valentine Ideas
Include personal notes on the valentine or on a separate sheet of paper. Even if your child can write only her own name, this will further personalize her present. Laminating, framing or including the valentine in a scrapbook will keep it from being damaged or lost. Creating crafts with your child is an everlasting memory that can be photographed and given with the valentine. Don't be afraid to let her use her creativity when turning an ordinary valentine into a memory of growing up.
