Grosgrain bows are durable, and perfect for little ones
Grosgrain hair bows are different from other types of bows, and the ribbon is the thing that sets them apart. Grosgrain is a type of ribbon that is textured, and is usually made with a polyester blend fabric. Grosgrain ribbon is ribbed with bumpy lines that lie horizontally. This makes it easy to grasp and work into various bow shapes. This style of ribbon is good to try if you are new to bow making.
Instructions
1. Grab your ribbon with the hand you do not typically write with. Use your thumb and forefinger to grasp the end as you hold it securely in place.
2. Wrap the ribbon with your free hand around the width of your hand. It will be about 4 inches long. You can bring the ribbon down a bit and squeeze your fingers together so that all your fingertips are touching if you need to adjust for a smaller size. This will make about 3 inches or less, for small baby bows.
3. Wrap your ribbon around your hand three full times until you end up where you started. Cut it off the spool if you are using one. Lay your ribbon down.
4. Put some clear nail polish on both ends of your ribbon. Allow it to dry before working again.
5. Repeat steps 1 and 2. Keep your wire close by.
6. Gently slip the ribbon off your hand and keep it stacked in layers so you only see one big loop. Grasp it directly in the center with the hand you just used to wind the ribbon around. Take at least 6 inches of wire and lay the ribbon in the center of the wire.
7. Intersect the wire simultaneously while removing the hand that is grasping the ribbon in the center. Use both hands to continue the two loose ends of wire around your ribbon coil at least three or four times. Tie the wire tight like you are about to tie a bow. Snip off the loose wire once it is secure. Leave about a quarter-inch tail for both loose ends and curl them around the center.
8. Cut another piece of ribbon, from the spool you just used, or use a different color of grosgrain ribbon that complements the one you have been working with. Cut it to about 4 inches long. Keep it generally the same size if you are changing colors.
9. Tie your smaller ribbon directly over the metal wire. Tie it like you are about to make a bow but just intersect the two tails, put one end under the other until the tails are at the opposite ends they started from, and pull tight (just like the first step of tying your shoe). Snip off any loose ends of the center ribbon. Apply a tiny dab of hot glue to the center of the knot in the back to keep it from coming undone.
10. Fan your bow out by simply pulling the coiled layers out from under each other. Fan it out wide and play around with it until it has a nice fluffy shape.
11. Heat up your glue gun and make a thin line of glue on top of the metal barrette. Press the bow down immediately. Make sure the center of the bow is lined up with the center of the barrette. Press down and let your new grosgrain hair bow dry before wearing.
