Duct tape is used for more than just repairing items around the home or hanging a poster in a dorm room. Duct tape is being used to make personal accessories and even clothing. This hardware store item has evolved from practical use to everyday craft supply.
Preparation
Purchase duct tape in a variety of colors. The tape is available in almost every color of the rainbow plus a few additional colors. Duct tape is even available with a camouflage pattern in light and dark colors. Because duct tape has string-like fibers running through it to enhance its strength, use a pair of sharp scissors for cutting. Cutting a small slit into the tape and then trying to rip a piece off will leave you with an uneven edge.
Accessories
Men's wallets are easily duplicated using duct tape, and the best part is that you can dictate the size, shape and color to create a personalized duct tape wallet. The wallet can be the exact size of money so that it fits effortlessly into your pocket, or create a larger wallet to house credit cards and other items. Make the wallet with the outside, non-sticky part of the tape on both the outside and inside of each section. This prevents your money or other items from sticking to the wallet. Create the outside of the wallet with a base color that matches most of your outfits. Choose a different color to make the inside flaps and spice up the appearance of the wallet. One benefit of a duct tape wallet is that it maintains its flat shape in your pocket.
Use duct tape to make women's purses. This project has a lot of room for creativity and use of color. A duct tape purse can have a single pocket and flap or multi pockets with an open concept. Because purses are larger than wallets, duct tape purse designers often create images with duct tape on the outside of the handbag. The sticky side of the tape makes it easy for crafters to adhere designs to the matte side of the tape on the outside of the bag. Duct tape can also be used as a strap for the purse. You have the option of making a flat strap or a rope. When duct tape is woven together it resembles the chain straps of many high-end purses.
Finishing
Inspect your completed duct tape object for any unfinished ends or sticky parts. Ends that protrude beyond the purse can get caught on something and pull away from your bag. This can disrupt the entire purse so make sure each end is sealed securely. Cover sticky spots on the purse with more duct tape to prevent clothing fiber and other debris from attaching to the spot.
