Make Awesome Hair Laces and ribbons

Use your scrap ribbons to make cool hair accessories.

If you have some extra ribbons lying around the house, you can use them to make some cool hair accessories for yourself or for your friends. Cool hair ribbon accessories are easy to make with a few inexpensive items from the craft store, or the craft aisle at your local department store. If you follow the right steps, you can embellish a plain ponytail band with different lengths of ribbon, or make a pretty flower hair barrette.

Instructions

Ribbon Ponytail Band

1. Measure and cut lengths of ribbon to the length that you want them to hang from your ponytail holder. If you have long hair, cut the ribbons so that the longest ones are about the length of your hair when it is in a ponytail. Multiply this length by two and cut your ribbons to that length. Cut different pieces of ribbon at different lengths for a layered effect, and cut as many ribbons as you want.

2. Tie each ribbon to a plain ponytail band, but make sure it is the kind with a fabric cover instead of just the rubber band. Tie the ribbon at the center to get even lengths of the same ribbon to hang down. You can also tie them off-center to have one side longer than the other.

3. Run about eight stitches up and down through the knot with a needle and thread to keep the knot from getting untied. Keep tying and stitching the knots onto the ponytail band until you have added all the ribbons that you want.

4. Measure and cut a 1-inch-wide piece of ribbon 12 inches long. Cut a "V" shape into both ends of the ribbon by snipping from the outside at an angle to the center line on each side of the ribbon.

5. Place the ribbon horizontally in front of you with the underside facing up. Cross the end of the ribbon on the right over the center of the ribbon, and do the same with the end on the left to form an "X" over the middle of the ribbon.

6. Cut a piece of 22 gauge wire to about 3 inches long. Use your fingers to pinch the center of the ribbon and the center of the "x" together to form the bow. Wrap the piece of wire around the middle to hold it together and make sure the ends of the wire aren't showing.

7. Dab a pea-sized amount of E6000 glue to the center of the back of the bow. Attach the bow to the flat part of a hair barrette base. Wait at least 3 hours for the glue to dry.

8. Apply E6000 glue to the back of a fabric flower that matches with the color of the ribbon. Stick the flower to the middle of the bow and hold it there for 5 minutes. Wait 24 hours for the glue to dry.
