Tie your hair back with a homemade cheerleading hair bow.
Cheerleading hair bows come in different sizes, colors and shapes, but they aren't just used to accessorize a cheerleading uniform. When cheering, girls with long hair must have it pulled back and out of their faces. This makes it easier to see while moving around, avoiding any missteps and accidents. Cheerleading hair bows usually represent school colors and team mascots. Save time searching stores for specific colors and create your own cheerleading hair bows.
Instructions
1. Decide how long the main ribbon will be on the hair bow. Double the desired length and add 1/2 inch onto the measurement. A second colored ribbon will be added to the main bow. This should measure 1 inch less than the main bow. For example, if the main bow will be 4 inches long, you will need a strip of ribbon measuring 8 1/2 inches. The second ribbon will measure 7 1/2 inches.
2. Measure and cut the two ribbon colors. Thread the needle and tie a slipknot at the end.
3. Match up the two ends of the main ribbon, creating a ring with the printed side of the ribbon on the outside. Overlap the two ends approximately 1/2 inch. Push the top center of the ring down to the bottom, pinching them together.
4. Position the needle beneath the overlapped ends, directly in the center of the ribbon. Push the needle up through the bottom and pull the thread tight. This secures the top and bottom of the ring together. Hold the middle of the bow and wind the threaded needle around the center of the ribbon several times, pulling the ribbon tight and creating the middle of the bow. Tie off the thread and cut the end.
5. Create the second smaller bow by completing the same steps used for the main bow.
6. Place a small dab of hot glue on the top of the thread on the main bow. Set the smaller bow directly on top of the glue, positioning the centers together. Let the glue dry and turn the bows over.
7. Cut a thinner piece of ribbon, measuring about 6 inches. Glue one end of the ribbon to the back center of the main bow. Let the glue dry. Wrap the ribbon around the top of the bows and back to the bottom.
8. Position the ponytail tie on top of the glued end of the ribbon. Put a fair amount of hot glue on the ponytail tie. Wrap the ribbon through the center of the ponytail tie and around the bows a second time, securing the tie into place. Let the glue dry.
9. Secure the loose end in place with another dab of hot glue on the bottom. Let the glue dry and cut away any extra ribbon.
