Decorative bows are gorgeous on packages, gift bags,and even in home decor, but it can cost a fortune to purchase a decorative bow from the store. You can make your own decorative ribbon bow by following a few simple, step-by-step instructions, allowing you to fully customize the color, size and appearance of your bow. Once you've learned make your own, you'll never have to pay too much for a hand-made decorative bow again.
Instructions
1. Christmas bows are often red or green.
Choose your ribbon in a color, width and material suitable for the size of bow you are trying to make. Your vision, and the location of the bow upon completion, will determine the color and width of your ribbon choice.
2. Make sure you have enough ribbon to work with.
Pull out a length of ribbon. Bows for packages usually require about 45 inches of ribbon to complete. Use your left thumb to mark a spot about 6 inches from one end of your ribbon. Hold the ribbon between your thumb and forefinger. Use your other hand to fold the next 6 inches of ribbon under, making a loop of about 3 inches.
3. Hold the ribbon firmly while forming your bow.
Hold the loop and ribbon with your fingers and make another 3-inch loop just as you made the first. Repeat the loop-making technique to create two 4-inch loops from about 8 inches of ribbon, two 4 1/2-inch loops from two 9-inch segments of ribbon, and two 5-inch loops from 10-inch segments of ribbon. Hold the base of each loop securely with your fingers.
4. Use wire or other fasteners to attach your bow.
Place a segment of floral wire, at least 5 inches long, between your left thumb (the thumb holding the bow) and your loops. If you plan to use the wire to fasten your bow to something, use a longer segment.
Check to ensure that the wire is centered on the bow. Bend the wire around the back of the ribbon and wind the two pieces together, like a twist-tie on a package of bread. Cut any excess wire as needed.
5. Use your fingers to shape your bow until it has the look you desire.
