Create A Funky Loopy Boutique Bow

Making boutique hair bows at home is relatively easy and inexpensive. Though traditional hair bows with two or four proportional loops may get the job done most days, a funky, loopy hair bow with several different kinds of ribbon is in order every once in a while. This bow starts with a felt circle, to which you will stitch each piece of ribbon. This eliminates the need to keep one hand fixed in an uncomfortable position as you attempt to hold myriad loops together.

Instructions

1. Cut two circles roughly 1 inch in diameter out of the felt square with scissors. Discard the extra felt.

2. Thread your needle with 48 inches of thread doubled over to form a 24-inch double thread. Knot it at the end.

3. Cut 5-inch-long pieces of ribbon. You do not have to use a set number, but 20 would be a reasonable number with which to start.

4. Separate the pieces into two groups. The first group is for pieces which will remain straight when sewn to the bow. The second group is for pieces you will make into loops, then sew to the bow. It does not matter how many are in each group.

5. Seal the ends of the pieces which will remain straight. Dab the ends with a no-fray sealant.

6. Run the needle through the center of the felt circle.

7. Hold a piece of the ribbon that will remain straight. Fold it in half at an angle to form a flat V-shape. Run the needle through the fold on the ribbon. Push the ribbon all the way down to the felt. Take the needle back through the fold on the ribbon and the felt circle. You may need to fold the ribbon and felt in half to help force the needle through. Run the needle back through the felt to the side with the ribbon.

8. Hold a piece of the ribbon that will become a loop. Fold the ribbon in half. Match up the ends exactly to form a loop. Run the needle through the meeting point on the ribbon. Push the ribbon all the way down the felt. Take the needle back through the ribbon and felt. Run the needle back through the felt to the side with the ribbon.

9. Repeat these steps to sew on loops and folds of ribbon until the bow is full and you find it aesthetically pleasing. Each piece of ribbon should not be stitched to the same spot on the circle. However, some will invariably overlap.

10. Run the needle through the felt, to the side without ribbon, after you stitch the last piece of ribbon onto the circle. Tie the thread in a knot and trim the excess and needle away.

11. Apply hot glue to the underside of the circle. Attach the other circle to hide all of the stitching. Hot glue the felt circle to the top of the barrette.
