Some girls in the '80s aimed for the preppy look.
While women in the 1980s wanted to look like Princess Diana or characters from "Dynasty," girls took a younger and fresher approach, parodying the styles of "Flashdance," Madonna, Valley girls, Mary Lou Retton and Molly Ringwald, to name a few. Preppy or punk was in and fads came and went quickly, including everything from leg warmers to jellies. Baggy shirts and skin-tight leggings or jeans were popular, and many girls wouldn't leave home without their favorite jean jacket. The fashion trends of the '80s are easy to emulate.
Instructions
1. Check out a vintage clothing store or a teen of the '80s closet to find the styles made popular in the 1980s. Wear bright neon or fluorescent shirts with matching accessories. Everything from socks, scarves and jewelry took on neon hues in the '80s. Plastic bangles and jelly bracelets matched the bright shirts.
Wear large sweatshirts falling off one shoulder (reminiscent of "Flashdance") as well as baggy blazers with the sleeves rolled up, army jackets, slogan T-shirts and jean jackets covered with pins.
Flip up the collars on polo shirts and blouses. Crop tops, exercise clothing with leg warmers and Madonna influences were all big in the '80s.
2. Find acid-wash blue jeans. The tighter and more rips, the better. Wear pinstripe jeans tucked into short suede boots. Corduroy slacks were in, as were sweatpants, leggings covered by leg warmers, and nylon puffy pants with tapered ankles.
Look for '80s jeans made by Levis, Gap, Jordache, Guess, Calvin Klein, Coke, Esprit, L.A. Gear, Benetton and Gloria Vanderbilt.
3. Tease your hair to give yourself the big hair of the '80s. Then mousse it and spray it. Color your hair every color of the rainbow with temporary dyes. Other trends were crimping, headbands and big hair bows like Madonna wore.
4. Add accessories to complete your look. Mini skirts and leg warmers were two of the biggest fads in the 1980s and were often worn together. Wear Madonna's lacy gloves and piled-on necklaces, penny loafers, jellies plastic shoes, twisty bead necklaces, sterling spoon rings, big earrings, several belts worn about the hips and Swatch watches.
