Get the perfect hair for your special occasion.
A lot of planning and money goes into attending a formal event like a wedding, banquet or dance. After spending money on an expensive dress, shoes and jewelry to match, save your budget and a trip to the salon with an easy hairstyle that you can do at home. Professional hairstylist Carah Amelie says that adding a voluminous bump to any style can create a neat, elegant hairdo that is fit for any special occasion.
Instructions
Create the Bump
1. Curl all of your hair in loose spiral curls using your curling iron or flat iron. To minimize heat damage, pin curl your hair the night before your big event. Make pin curls by wrapping small sections of hair around your finger in small spirals that resemble pinwheels and securing it to the scalp with bobby pins. Spray your hair with hairspray for longer-lasting curls.
2. "Back comb" a section of hair at the crown of your head using a brush. Hold your hair vertically and brush the hair from the midpoint of the strand downward toward the scalp. This will create volume in the hair to create a bump.
3. Pick up half of your hair, beginning just over your ear, and gather it in the back of your head. Use bobby pins to secure the hair in place. You may need to push the gathered hair up slightly to create a more prominent bump before pinning it down. For best results, use bobby pins that are close to the color of your hair.
Style Options
4. Let your spiral curls cascade loosely down the back of your head.
5. Pull your hair into a high ponytail. The curls will dress up this usually casual look. Touch up any fallen curls with your curling iron.
6. Pull your hair into a low bun by twisting your hair and wrapping it into a "cinnamon roll"-shaped bun in the back of your head. Secure the bun with bobby pins. For best results, tie your hair back with an elastic band before twisting it.
7. Create a side-swept updo. Pull your loose hair to one side and let the curls hang over your shoulder. Then take small sections of hair (beginning on the opposite side of your head), pull them to the side you want your hair to fall on and pin them with bobby pins. This will ensure that your hair remains side-swept for the duration of your event.
8. Dress up any of these styles with a barrette or flower pin. These accessories will also help you hide any bobby pins that may be visible on the back of your head..
