Homemade Organic Hair Serum

Hair serum is a popular product that tames frizzy hair and makes your mane appear glossy and healthy. You can find hair serum in most drug stores, but the prices can be unaffordable. Fortunately, there is an easy and inexpensive way to create your own hair serum. And since it's made from natural products, your hair will get a break from products that are full of alcohol and other random ingredients that do more harm than good.

Honey-based serum

One of the best products for your body in general is local, organic honey. Honey contains many vitamins and minerals that improve your overall health, including the health of your hair. An easy honey-based hair serum requires you to combine 1/8 of a teaspoon of honey with 1 teaspoon of organic conditioner. Mix the two together until they are well blended. Rub a small amount of the product in between your palms and gently run your fingers through your hair. You can also apply the product to a comb or toothbrush and apply it to the frizziest areas on your head.

Oil-based serum

Many products you find in stores use a silicone oil for their hair serums. Not only is silicone inorganic, it also damages the hair by making it more brittle and dry. As an organic DIY alternative, create your own oil-based serum with either a vegetable oil (including olive oil) or nut oil. To make this serum, combine one tablespoon of your choice oil with two to three drops of organic essential oil (try lavender, for example). Evenly apply a dime-sized amount to either wet or dry hair.

Things to avoid

When your hair is already frizzy and dry, the worse thing you could do is add a product that further damages it. Avoid items that have a lot of drying alcohols. Those are often found in hairsprays and go by the names isopropyl alcohol or denatured alcohol. Also stay away from proteins. While a little protein is OK, excessive amounts can cause a lot of damage. That's because they dry the hair and cause frizzing to get out of control.
