Wedding Evening Makeup Tips

Darker, more dramatic makeup is appropriate for an evening wedding.

While a traditional wedding takes place in the afternoon, many brides opt for an evening wedding. The dark of the evening sets a more glamorous, dramatic tone for the event, which may also affect how you choose to do your makeup.

Go Dramatic

During an evening wedding, the lighting will be darker, so makeup should be bolder and more dramatic in order to be noticeable. Light colors may look tired and pale, especially in professional photographs. For the best evening look, use a heavy, bronze foundation with a yellow undertone. Pick a darker lipstick, such as burgundy or red, and combine it with a lip pencil and lip gloss to create a full, glossy look. Use dark eye shadow and eyelash strips to bring out the eyes and make them more defined. A shimmery blush can also reflect well in evening light.

Note that evening wedding makeup should match your skin tone and hair color for the best results. Fair skinned and blond brides look better in cool colors, such as gray, blue and lavender. Darker skinned and brunette brides look better in warm colors, such as burgundy and brown. Brides without a lot of experience in makeup may want to hire a makeup artist for the wedding, as they will be able to best create an evening look that isn't faded, too overdone or wrong for their skin tone.

Smoky Eyes

While smoky eyes can seem too bold for a day wedding, they're more appropriate for an evening wedding. Smoky eyes can give the bride a glamorous, sexy look that draws attention to the features of the face. Use a black or gray pencil eyeliner to outline the top and bottom of the lash line. Smudge the eyeliner with a cotton swab, then apply a dark eyeshadow, such as blue or green, that complements the bride's skin tone, to the eyelid. Use a shimmery silver eyeshadow along the crease of the eyelid to give the smoky eyes a subtle shine. Keep applying eyeshadow until the desired darkness is achieved.

Alternative Makeup

Alternative makeup mimics vintage and Hollywood glamor makeup styles, such as Audrey Hepburn's full lips and thick eyebrows or the smoky eyes and cupid's bow lips of 1920s pinup girls. Alternative makeup works well in the evening because it is often dramatic. Makeup that appears gaudy or over-the-top in the daytime could appear glamorous in the evening. If the bride is wearing a vintage or ball gown dress, then alternative evening wedding makeup can give the style a fun twist. Use an iridescent or bronze foundation and unusual colors in the eyeshadow, such as wine purple or green. A richly colored matte lipstick, such as pink, orange or bright red, makes the bride's lips pop and gives her an electric look. For cupid's bow lips, apply the lipstick with more height added to the lips and less width, for a small, fuller look. Create thick and defined eyebrows with a dark eyebrow pencil.

Remember not to overdo the look, as this can cause the bride to look like she's wearing a painted face. If the bride has eye-catching lips, tone down the color of the eyes and vice-versa.
