Homemade Flower Hair Clip

Complete your updo or polish your straight hairstyle using a specialty flower hair clip! Flower hair clips can be purchased online and in beauty supply stores, and are also inexpensive and easy to make at home. A variety of flower clips can be made using simple household supplies and inexpensive products found in most craft and home care stores. These products are perfect for spring and summer weather, and help tie seasonal outfits together. Make your flower clip today!

Yellow Summer Flower Hair Clip

Yellow flower clips are perfect for summer weather and are also a great accessory for Easter. To make a yellow summer flower hair clip, purchase a fake yellow flower (preferably a daisy, sunflower or hydrangea), yellow gemstone and ribbon from a craft store. Ribbon should be in a complementary shade, such as lavender, light pink, baby blue or light spring green. Be sure to have scissors, a glue gun, a bare metal hair clip, and a glue stick handy. If you do not own a glue gun, purchase the product and glue sticks at a local craft store along with other supplies.

To begin, line hair clip along ribbon and cut a strip three times that length. Pinch hair clip open and line with hot glue, then place edge of ribbon into the clip and pinch closed. Allow to dry, then pull ribbon tightly and line the top edge of the hair clip with glue and line with ribbon. Allow to dry, then bring the ribbon down and line glue along the bottom of the hair clip. Pull ribbon on and allow to dry. Cut off any remaining ribbon with scissors. Once dry, glue the fake flower to the top center of the hair clip. Allow to dry, then glue yellow rhinestone to the center of the flower. Allow to dry, then place in hair.

White Organza Fabric Flower Clips

For more simple flower clips, simply cut four or five flower-shaped pieces out of poly-blend fabric, available at most craft supply stores. Shapes should be approximately two inches in diameter. Next, hold pieces together in the center and place edges of the flower above an open flame to melt the fabric slightly. Fabric will begin to curl inwards together as the fabric melts. Hold for less than a second and rotate until all edges are melted. Next, sew small beads into the center of the flowers to create a center, or glue a rhinestone into the center to resemble pollen. Attach to a bare metal hair clip at the edge--away from where clip opens--then allow to cool and dry.

Placing Clips in Hair

Flower hair clips can be used in a variety of ways. The most simple way to place a flower hair clip in someone's hair is to simply part the hair to the side or down the middle. If separating the hair to the side, separate three inches back on the side that has more hair. If separating the hair down the middle, take three inches from either side. Brush hair to straighten, then pull diagonally backwards, towards the side of the scalp. Place the clip in hair to hold in place, or secure with a small elastic and place flower clip over elastic to hide it. Hair can also be secured in a ponytail, and the flower hair clip can be placed in the hair at the top of the base of the ponytail, disguising the elastic.
