Try these products to help tame your baby's hair.
Even baby hair can get tangled and messy, so use products that will keep it tame and clean. Make a habit of regularly caring for your baby's hair so it does not get extremely dry, oily or unruly. Baby shampoos and conditioners, oils and de-tanglers, and the right tools help you keep your baby's hair soft, smooth and fresh.
Shampoo and Conditioner
Baby shampoos and conditioners are "tear free," meaning they won't irritate your baby's eyes like adult shampoos and conditioners. Baby shampoos generally don't contain sulfates, which are chemicals found in most adult shampoos. Baby shampoos do, however, tend to have high pH levels, which can lead to tangling. Some shampoos and conditioners list the pH level on the bottle. Try to find baby shampoos and conditioners that contain a pH level between 4.5 and 6. According to the website What to Expect, there is no need to wash your baby's hair every day, especially newborns. A couple times a week is sufficient.
Oils and De-tangler
Oils can be used on the hair to moisturize and untangle it while adding moisture to the scalp. This is particularly important for African-American baby hair, because it generally does not produce as much oil, so moisturizing it weekly keeps it tangle-free and manageable. The Baby Center website suggests applying natural products, such as jojoba oil, emu oil, avocado oil, virgin coconut oil or almond oil, or creating your own product by mixing a light oil with natural ingredients such as rosemary or lavender. Another option for smoothing the hair and removing tangles is to use a baby de-tangler. These can be purchased, or you can make one of your own. To make your own, simply mix a solution of baby conditioner and water, and put it in a spray bottle.
Brushes and Combs
There are brushes and combs made specifically for use on babies' soft hair. Baby brushes have very soft bristles that are gentle on the hair and scalp. Baby combs are wide-toothed, so they are gentle on the hair and less likely to snag tangles. When brushing and combing a baby's hair, always do it gently and apply a bit of de-tangler or conditioner to help get out tangles.
