Make Ladybug Hair Clippies

Make Ladybug Hair Clippies

Pre-made hair clippies can be found in a variety of colors and themes that can make them a good choice for girls of almost any age, but trying to buy them all can be rather costly. The alternative is to make your own hair clippies. When you make your own hair clippies, you have more options than what you might have with the pre-made versions. You can customize the clippies that you make to suit the particular style and personality of the individual girl. Ladybug hair clippies are a good choice for many different age groups.

Instructions

Making the Ladybug Clippie Antennae

1. Apply the craft rubber cement to one piece (about 2 inches long) of the black grosgrain ribbon. Make sure that you coat both sides but leave about ½ inch from one short edge uncovered. You can trim the length later.

2. Cut along the long sides with the embroidery scissors, using the woven edges as a guide. You will stop cutting when you reach the dry portion of the ribbon.

3. Fold the middle portion of the ribbon down slightly and cut across to remove it. You now have two antennae sticking up from a small rectangle (the dry portion). Bend the two antennae outward slightly; the rubber cement will help hold the shape until it dries completely.

4. Cut the red grosgrain ribbon into two pieces. One piece should be 2 inches long, and the other should be 3 inches long.

5. Cut the second piece of black grosgrain ribbon to 1 ¼ inches long.

6. Fold the small piece of red ribbon to form a loop, matching the top end with the woven portion of the bottom. Apply the fabric tack to the end to hold it in place. The loop should now have a round bottom and a pointed top.

7. Fold the larger piece of red ribbon to form another loop in the same manner as the first, applying the fabric tack on the end.

8. Place the small red loop inside the larger red loop and apply fabric tack to hold the two loops together at their points.

9. Cut the pointed top off of the large loop using the embroidery scissors.

10. Attach your antenna piece to the top of the loop, where you cut off the point. Line the cut with the top of the antenna piece where the rectangle meets the antenna and apply fabric tack to hold in place.

11. Apply a strip of fabric tack to the 1 ¼ inch piece of black ribbon from tip to tip. Place the ribbon, tack side down, to the top of the loops, making sure that you cover the rectangle portion of the antenna piece. You will have pieces of black ribbon sticking out on both sides.

12. Flip the loops over to expose the backing and wrap the two black pieces around to secure them to the back inside the loops.

13. Attach your ladybug to the alligator clip. If you have covered the clip, you can use fabric tack. If the clip is uncovered, use the glue gun. Apply the adhesive liberally to the back of the ladybug where you folded the black ribbon around. Press the ladybug adhesive side down firmly to the flat portion of the clip.
