Halloween is a time for scary fun.
In an online poll conducted by FamilyFun.com, 55 percent of those responding listed Halloween as either their favorite or second-favorite holiday. Halloween presents a lot of opportunities for fun. Dressing in costume might seem like the apex of that entertainment, but there is a lot more to the holiday. Food plays a big part, including creepy treats like Mashed Boo-Tatoes. The opportunity for creativity and originality should be a part of all Halloween creation.
Spooky Foods
Mashed Boo-Tatoes represent one type of Halloween-oriented food that's both festive and tasty. Make mashed potatoes as normal, then put them into a piping bag that is generally used for baked goods. Use the bag to create ghost-shaped heaps of the potatoes. Sesame seeds can be added for eyes and mouth. Create another tasty treat with deviled eyeballs. Prepare eggs for deviling, but cut them width-wise, rather than length-wise. Use blue food coloring to color the deviling mix green. A slice of ripe olive makes a pupil.
Haunted Exteriors
Create your own exterior vision to breathe life into a unique Halloween display. Use masks and old clothes to create prop monsters. A dramatic use for the monsters can be as window creatures. Use painted cardboard to create a background around the creatures and place them looking out of the window. For added shock effect, get a remote control for a power strip. Rig a colored light in each window and plug the lights into the strip. That way, the creatures can suddenly appear in previously darkened windows with the flip of a switch.
Creepy Interiors
Rather than just decorating inside, try to create a scary scene. Proper utilization of the interior features can make that job a little easier. For instance, an old home with intricate architectural features is easier to adapt as a haunted house. A newer look works better as a mad scientist's lab. No matter what theme you choose, pay attention to details. Remove or hide items that don't work. Use lighting to highlight key areas. Tables, fencing and other barricades can move traffic on the safest path and keep certain aspects of the display hidden from view.
Halloween Makeovers
While purchasing a full costume outright is easy, assembling a costume has a lot of advantages. A great Halloween costume should allow you to really fall into the character and have fun. Of course, some costumes (an elaborate monster, for instance) require a greater level of skill to create than others. Work within your skill set. If you must use store-bought items, customize them to take away the "off the rack" look. Details can sell a costume, so pay attention to little things in designing your character.
