Removing urine smell from upholstered furniture, especially microsuede, is a complicated task. Because of the salt in urine, the odor will linger indefinitely if the stain is not completely removed. Before beginning the task, determine if the urine has penetrated through the matting to the base of the furniture. Urine odors may appear to be cleared up but if humidity increases, the odor will return.
Cleaning Urine Odor
When cleaning microsuede fabric, you must be careful as the fabric will react to cleaners and can be ruined. To eliminate urine odor, sprinkle baking soda over the soiled area and allow it to absorb the urine. When the baking soda dries, use an old toothbrush or small brush to gently brush away the dried powder. If necessary to wash the area, do a small section at a time using water and mild dish soap. Use a blow dryer set on cool air on the fabric after washing is completed and brush gently with a soft brush to fluff up the fabric. There are products available at the grocery store and hardware store to remove odor, but these products actually cover up odor, not eliminate it. Do not spray anything directly on the fabric as it could leave a mark on the microsuede fabric. If the odor lingers, spray the matting under the fabric.
Access the Soiled Area
If the couch is treated with water repellent or stain guard, liquids will not penetrate the fabric. If the couch is not treated, liquids can penetrate the matting; it is important to determine how deep it has gone into the matting. If the couch has cushion covers, remove the soiled one to determine if the fabric was penetrated and the liquid absorbed into the matting. If there are no cushion covers, make an incision in an area that is out of sight and can be restitched after you examine the matting. If the matting is soiled, sprinkle heavily with baking soda, rub into the matting and restitch or put the cover back on. If the matting is soiled heavily, it may be necessary to have the matting replaced to eliminate the odor completely.
Bacteria
Because of the salt content in urine, it is difficult to completely remove urine from fabric. Even though it may seem the area is completely dry, humidity will cause the odor to activate. Urine creates a breeding ground for mold and bacteria, not to mention the offensive odor, and it may be necessary to replace the couch if the urine has penetrated the matting and the matting cannot be replaced.
