Create A Seafood Hair Bow

You can make a fish hair bow with colored ribbon.

You can make lots of cute critters out of colored ribbon. This goldfish hair bow is made using a length of orange ribbon and a few common haberdashery items. Once you've made your fish hair bow, you can use it in a variety of different ways. Sew it to a barrette, headband or hair elastic; team it with green ribbons to suggest aquatic plants or blue ribbon to suggest waves. This hair bow might make a fun accessory to wear at the beach or poolside.

Instructions

1. Cut a section of the 1-inch ribbon about 6 inches in length. Cut a section of the half-inch ribbon 4 inches in length.

2. Find the center of the larger piece of ribbon. Make a triangular fold so that the two halves of the ribbon cross each other. The triangular folded area will make the fish's head, with the fold in the ribbon forming its mouth. The two ends will form its tail.

3. Center the half-inch ribbon over the point where the two halves of the larger ribbon cross. Wrap the half-inch ribbon around the larger ribbon so that it looks smooth from the top (the side with the fish's mouth fold). Tie the ends of the half-inch ribbon in a simple overhand knot on the reverse of the fish. Do not pull too tight; the ribbon wrapping forms the body of the fish so it needs to be smooth. You also need to be able to adjust the ribbon.

4. Adjust the head, tail and mouth of the fish until you are satisfied with the way your fish looks. Using the orange sewing thread, make a few stitches on the reverse side to hold everything in place. Stitch the folds in the larger ribbon and the knot in the half-inch ribbon, making the stitches as small and invisible as possible.

5. Snip triangular cuts in the ends of the larger ribbon to make the fish's tail. Loop the ends of the smaller ribbon to form the fish's fins. Sew the loops into place on the reverse side of the fish bow.

6. Place the large sequin on the fish's head where its eye should be. Thread the needle with sewing thread. Push the needle up through the folded ribbon and out through the hole in the sequin. Thread the bead over the needle and onto the sewing thread. Push the needle back down through the hole and pull the thread tight. Make a few more passes through the bead so that it is firmly in place. Secure the thread on the reverse side of the fish hair bow with a few backstitches.

Sew your fish hair bow onto the barrette, headband or elastic.
