20's Costume Ideas

Flapper hair

The Roaring '20s, during the time when women fought for equality, the country's economy suffered greatly and the prohibition was in full effect, and it was also a time of a fashion revolution. The '20s fashion changed drastically for women then for men.

Flapper Dress

Fringe

There are a few ways you can make the flapper dress. Some stores sell a dress that already has a fringe. It should fall flat on you and not accentuate the female curves. Wearring straight dresses was the style in the '20s, when women trying to revolutionize fashion tried to minimize the female body stereotype by hiding their curves and wearing dresses that would flatten their breasts.

If you want to make your own dress, it's actually quite simple: All you will need is a plain sleeveless dress. Purchase an approximately 3-inch-long fringe and sew it to the hem of the dress; if you like you can layer the entire dress in fringe. You can find fringe at your local fabric or craft store.

Flapper Accessories

Long single-strand necklace

Although the dress is a big part of the costume, you need the right accessories to tie in the '20s look. It is essential to wear a long pearl necklace single strand that hangs loosely past your chest. Strappy heels are another essential piece, which can be worn with high gloves to give the outfit an extra kick.

The Flapper Hair

Last but definitely not least, the hairstyle is one of the most important aspects to complete this outfit. If your hair length is short and reaches only your chin or shorter, you are good. You should create finger waves with it to give it that '20s look. If you have long hair, crimping your hair with a 1-inch three-barrel waver and pinning it up will give it the effect of short finger-waved hair. A 1-inch three-barrel waver is a hot, round curling iron with three barrels that waves or crimps your hair. Or for an easier approach, go to your local costume store and purchase a short bob wig. As a final touch, adorn the hair with a headband with a feather or flower coming up on the side.
