Use ribbon with a festive design for your homemade hair bow.
Christmas hair bows are not very different than regular bows. The main distinction is the ribbon you choose for your design. Go with classic red and green ribbons, and perhaps accent them with a shiny white one. Silver and gold can be used interchangeably with either red or green. Use ribbon with a little shine or sparkle for an extra special party look. Or use blue, silver and white together for an alternate holiday color scheme.
Instructions
1. Measure out all of your ribbons to about 2 1/2-feet long. Put a little clear nail polish on all the ends of the ribbons to prevent fraying.
2. Gather the ribbons up and clamp them together with a clothespin at each end. Bring the clothsepins over to make a loop so that each one ends up at the opposite side.
3. Use a small section clip to clip directly in the center (the highest point) of the loop you just made. Bring the section clip down slowly to the intersection where the ribbons cross over each other. Stuff all the ribbon into the clip.
4. Bring the clothespins back up to their original sides. Make sure the loops are the same size as the ones you just made; you can trim off extra ribbon later if you have excess ribbon tails.
5. Intersect the ribbon where the section clip is. Open the section clip one last time and shove the remaining intersecting ribbon into the clip. You probably won't be able to close it all the way, but that's fine. Grab your wire.
6. Wrap the wire around the center of your ribbon as you remove the section clip. Adjust your ribbon loops, so that they are all the same size. Keep the wire tight, but loose enough to pull the ribbons and adjust them. Once you adjust the loops, wrap the wire tightly around about four times. Tie it off and cut it.
7. Grab a scrap piece of ribbon and tie it in the center where you just placed your wire. Knot it in the back so you only see a smooth center in the front. Clip off any extra ribbon. Place a dot of hot glue to keep the knot secure.
8. Put the center of the bow directly on the center of the metal barrette. Glue down, around the knot and press it onto the barrette. Glue the back side of the ribbon onto the metal as well in order to conceal it. Use a thin line of glue so it doesn't ooze and show.
