Ideas
If you are planning to bake a Hello Kitty cake, you probably need no introduction to this cute cartoon cat created by the Sanrio company. Hello Kitty's image has been gracing assorted Sanrio products including backpacks, stationery and accessories for more than 35 years. Delight fans or collectors of all ages with a homemade Hello Kitty cake. Add this to my Recipe Box.
Hello Kitty Shaped Cake
The Wilton company has produced a pan in the shape of Hello Kitty's face, but as of July 2010, the pan is listed as not currently in stock. You may be able to locate a Hello Kitty pan in a thrift store, craft store or through an Internet auction site, but don't fret if you can't get your hands on one of these pans. You can recreate the look by carving the cake from any rectangle or oblong-shaped cake. Draw the outline of Hello Kitty's head and ears on a large piece of paper or cardboard. Once you are completely satisfied with the shape of your template, cut it out and place it on top of a chilled cake. Carve around the template with a serrated knife to reveal Hello Kitty. Now you just need to cover the cake with white frosting and create Hello Kitty's face with assorted candies. Black shoestring licorice whiskers, candy-coated chocolate eyes and nose, and a length of red fruit snack tied into a bow are examples, but you can use any type of candy you prefer.
Hello Kitty Cake Decorations
Instead of recreating Hello Kitty in cake form, you can add her likeness to cakes of any shape or size. If you are skilled at cake decorating, you can simply pipe Hello Kitty on the top of your decorated cake. Novice cake decorators will probably experience difficulty with this method, but other options exist. Cut Hello Kitty from a piece of white fondant and place it on the cake, using additional colors of fondant to create her clothes or hair accessories. You can purchase ready-to-use fondant in a variety of colors from craft stores or cake decorating supply shops. Another option is to take advantage of store-bought Hello Kitty icing decorations or cake transfers. Icing decorations are usually small, but you can arrange several on a simple frosted cake to give it a Hello Kitty theme. Cake transfers or edible images are created with edible paper and inks. Place one of these images on a frosted cake and add a decorative border to hide the edge of the paper. The Hello Kitty picture will appear to be printed directly onto the cake.
Hello Kitty Cake Toppers
You might be able to find Hello Kitty cake toppers or candles for use on your cake, but don't limit yourself to these options. Any Hello Kitty toy, purse or other accessory can become a cake topper. Whether you choose a new or used item, wash it thoroughly in hot, soapy water to remove any dirt. Dry the toy thoroughly and place it on your cake. If the cake's frosting could possibly damage the item, place a small square of wax paper or parchment paper underneath the item to protect it. Just remember to remove the paper along with the Hello Kitty cake topper before serving the cake.
