Make Seeing stars With Wired Ribbon

Make Butterflies With Wired Ribbon

Use wired ribbon to make a butterfly. Wired ribbon holds its shape. The wires are at the edges of the ribbon and very thin. Because of their size, they cannot be bent too much or they will break. Buy wired ribbon from sewing or craft stores. The wires are thin enough that they won't damage scissors, but you can use wire cutters to cut the wire, and then use scissors for the ribbon.

Instructions

1. Use the hobby knife or box cutter to cut the dowel rod. The dowel rod is the body of the butterfly. Cut it any size you want.

2. Paint the dowel rod. Let it dry.

3. Plug in the hot glue gun. Set it aside while it heats up.

4. Cut four two-foot pieces of ribbon. Note, if the dowel rod is more than six inches, cut four-foot pieces of ribbon.

5. Use the hot glue gun to put a small dot of hot glue on one end of one piece of ribbon. Press the glue spot onto the side at one end of the dowel rod. Wrap the end of the ribbon around the top of the rod. Hold for 10 seconds to let the glue set. Repeat with another piece of ribbon on the opposite side of that end of the dowel rod. The ribbon ends can overlap on the dowel rod.

6. After the glue dries, lay the dowel rod flat. Use your hands to make a wing shape from the piece of ribbon. You are making the top part of the wing. Pinch the ribbon about a fourth of the way from the top. Bring into the center of the dowel rod. Glue in place. Repeat with the other side. After the glue dries, bend the wire ribbon so it has a rounded shape. Cut off excess ribbon.

7. Apply glue to bottom 1/4 inch of one of the remaining pieces of ribbon. Wrap it around the bottom of the dowel rod, as you did to the top in above steps. Repeat with the other piece of ribbon.

8. Pinch the ribbon a quarter the way down and glue the pinched part just under the center of the dowel rod. Repeat with the other side. After the glue dries, arrange the wires so they make a rounded bottom wing shape.

9. Cut two two-inch pieces of thin wire. Wrap the bottom of each piece around the top of the dowel rod to make antennae.
