Tools For Personalized Oneness Candle lights

Use your creativity to make a personalized unity candle for your wedding ceremony.

The unity candle ceremony is an important part of the wedding ceremony that symbolizes the joining of two separate lives into one. To make this part of your ceremony even more special, create your own personalized unity candles. Use ribbons, photos, paint or pressed flowers to decorate your unity candles to fit with your wedding theme.

Photos

Personalize your unity candle with your favorite picture of you and your spouse-to-be by printing out the photo onto water slide decal paper and affixing it to the candle. Scan your photo into the computer or select one you already have on file and crop or resize it to fit onto the candle. Print the photo onto water slide decal paper and trim it to the desired size. Damped the paper with water and slide the photo onto the candle, then use a paper towel to remove any excess moisture. After the paper dries completely, apply a layer of clear sealant and add a decorative border using glitter, ribbon or stick-on rhinestones.

Ribbons

One of the simplest and most elegant ways to personalize a unity candle is to tie an ornate bow around it using silk, satin or lace ribbon. When selecting a ribbon to use, try to find a color that matches your wedding's color scheme and select a type of ribbon that is sturdy enough to retain its shape. Tie a length of ribbon around the center of the candle and then shape the type of bow you desire. For a more structured bow, use wired ribbon, and for a flowing bow, try lace or satin ribbon. To make sure your bow stays in place during the ceremony, use craft glue or hot glue on the back of the ribbon and bow to secure it.

Paint

If you want your unity candle to remain sleek in shape and unhampered by bows or other decorations, try painting a simple design onto the candle using craft or glitter paint. Select a design and then trace it onto the candle using a sharpened pencil to lightly carve the design into the wax. If you are good at drawing, you can try drawing the design onto the candle by hand, or you can make use of flexible stencils. Once the design has been transferred to the candle, paint over it with a colored craft paint or glitter paint. Protect your finished candle with a layer of clear sealant.

Pressed Flowers

If you plan to decorate your unity candles with pressed flowers, you need to prepare the pressed flowers several weeks ahead of time. Gather a variety of flowers, herbs and leaves that you find appealing and press each one between the pages of a thick book. Small, colorful flowers and leaves work best for decorating unity candles. Check the flowers once a week until they appear to be completely dried and flattened. Remove all the pressed flowers from the book and experiment with different arrangements until you find the design you like best. Attach the flowers, herbs and leaves to store-bought candles in the design you have chosen by using hot glue or craft glue. Decorate only the bottom half of each candle, leaving ample room for the candle to burn during the ceremony.

Rhinestones and Other Ornaments

Add some sparkle to your unity candle by decorating it with stick-on rhinestones or other colored stones purchased at your local craft store. Arrange the rhinestones randomly over the surface of the candle or shape them into you and your spouse's initials. Colored beads are a great alternative to rhinestones and can be a subtle means for adding color to your unity candle. Affix beads to the candle with hot glue or craft glue or string them onto a length of thread or embroidery floss and wrap it around the candle, gluing the beads in place.
