Accessorize hair, shoes and handbags with whimsical curly-korker bows. These dramatic bows stand out in a crowd, but they can be expensive to purchase. Fortunately, curly-korker bows are not difficult to make, but they do require a specific type of ribbon. Look for ribbon and other necessary supplies at craft stores. Attach the curly-korker bows onto metal barrette forms, plastic barrettes or headbands to make custom hair accessories. Glue the curly bows to sandals or handbags to create other fanciful accessories.
Instructions
1. Cut 18 28-inch long strands of polyester grosgrain ribbon. The ribbon may be up to 5/8 inches wide, depending on how you plan to use the bows. Ribbons that are wider than 3/8 inches are too bulky for hair accessories, but may work well as embellishments for shoes or handbags. You can also adjust the number of ribbons to make the curly-korker bow more or less full.
2. Spray fabric stiffener over the length of each ribbon. Clip one end of each ribbon to one end of a 12-inch long dowel with a wood clothes pin. The diameter of the dowel equals the size of the korker-curl.
3. Wrap the ribbon around the dowel, from one end to the other in a spiral. The edges of the ribbon should not overlap. Clip the ribbon end to the dowel with a wood clothes pin.
4. Line two baking sheets with foil. Arrange the dowels onto the baking sheets so that they are not touching.
5. Bake the ribbons in a 275-degree oven for 15 minutes. The heat combined with the fabric stiffener sets the curly-korker ribbons into permanent spiral curls. Check one ribbon curl after baking for 15 minutes; if the curl is too loose, rewrap it and continue baking the ribbons for 10 more minutes.
6. Allow the baked ribbons to cool for at least two hours. Remove both sets of clothes pins from each dowel and slide the curly ribbons from the dowel.
7. Spray the ends of each curly-korker bow with no-fray spray. Cut a 10-inch long strand of 1/4-inch wide polyester ribbon.
8. Bundle the curly-korker ribbons together. Tie the 1/4-inch ribbon around the center of the bundled curly ribbons. Cut the excess 1/4-inch wide ribbon.
