Add lace and trims to fabric crafts.
Delicate lace and pretty fabric trims turn plain craft projects into eye-catching decorative items. There's a vast range of trims and laces available from sewing supply shops, and you can also collect your own by recycling those on old clothes and soft furnishings. So get ready with your ribbons and bows and add a feminine touch to whatever you're making.
Hair Barrette
Turn a plain hair clasp into a lacy extravaganza with some sequins and bows. Apply craft adhesive to the underside of a piece of ribbon and glue along the top of the barrette, folding any excess material round to the underside of the barrette. Tie 6-inch length of lace ribbon in a large bow and glue in the center of the top of the barrette. Glue several sequins or sparkly beads into the center of the bow.
Monogrammed T-shirt
Mark out the first initial for a trim-tastic monogrammed T-shirt on the center of a plain T-shirt using dressmaker's chalk. Cut lengths of lace ribbon to fit the lines and glue in place using fabric craft glue. Choose a ribbon in a contrasting color to your T-shirt such as shocking pink on black fabric or red on a white T-shirt. Tie several bows of very narrow satin ribbon in a color that matches the lace and glue these round the letters you've created, or the neck or hemline of the shirt.
3-D Floral Card
Create a basic blank greeting card by folding a length of colored card stock in half. Cut four flower shapes, make each one progressively smaller than the last, from a piece of lace. Glue one on top of each other in the middle of the card. Start by gluing the largest directly onto the card and layering them so the smallest is on top of all the others. Add a decorative button for the flower's center. Apply a thin green ribbon with glue as a stem, if desired. Create a border of gold brocade ribbon round the edge of the card.
Choker
Create a lace and trim choker necklace that adds vintage glamor to any outfit. Measure round your neck and cut a piece of broad lace ribbon to that length, plus 2 inches. Cut a piece of black velvet ribbon, narrower than the lace to the same length and a piece of narrow gold gold also to the same length. Glue the velvet along the length of the lace using fabric glue and the cord along the length of the velvet. Cut a 1 inch piece of self adhesive velcro to one end of your necklace. Turn the necklace over and stick another 1 inch piece of velcro to the other end.
