Fake bow ties are an ideal way of quickly executing a costume change on stage, in the middle of a comic act or simply a quick and easy way of smartening up a formal shirt. Bow ties come in a couple of different styles, namely batwing and butterfly. These styles are so named because of the shape of the blades, another name for the ends of a bow tie. The blades are used to tie the decorative knot--the remainder of the length of the tie is simply used to attach the tie onto the wearer's neck.
Instructions
1. Choose the piece of ribbon that you want to make your fake bow tie out of. The ribbon should be about 3/4 of an inch in width. Use black ribbon for a classic look or use a material that suits your personality for a less traditional look. Stripes won't work, as they will be distorted when the knot is tied, but polka dots or small pictures do work well on bow ties.
2. Cut a 24-inch long piece from the ribbon. Measure about a quarter of the way up the length of the ribbon on both ends. Make a mark in chalk at this point. From here, use the chalk to draw two lines, tapering the ribbon into a thinner shape, roughly half the width of the ends of the ribbon. Cut the ribbon to this new shape with the scissors. The ribbon should be mostly thin now, except for two cricket bat shapes--the "blades"--at the end of the ribbon.
3. Lay the ribbon in front of you on the table, then pick up the blades and tie them in a knot just as if you were beginning to tie a shoelace. Continue tying the shoelace knot by tying the two loops together in a bow and pulling tight. The two blades should now be in a bow with the rest of the ribbon loop hanging low.
4. Cut the bow from the loop, leaving about 1/2 inch of the thin part of the ribbon attached to each end of the bow. Push a safety pin horizontally through the back of the bow to hold the whole thing together. The pin should go into the ribbon, then out again, then into and then out again to leave a hookable bar in the middle of the bow, and should be invisible from the front of the bow.
5. Hook a bobby pin over the exposed bar of the pin. Clip the bobby pin onto the neck of a shirt or other garment to use the fake bow tie.
