Make an oversized hair bow with ribbon by following a few simple steps.
Oversized hair bows are quite a popular fashion trend. CosmoGirl reports it was stars like Lady Gaga and Paris Hilton who started the oversized hair bow trend. No matter what your hair length, thickness, or cut, you can clip an oversized bow in your hair, and give any hairstyle the perfect finishing touch. You can make an oversized hair bow yourself by following a few basic instructions, with materials you may already have at home.
Instructions
1. Cut your ribbon to the desired length. For a basic 5-inch-long, oversized bow, you need three separate pieces of ribbon: one of 35 inches from a 1.5-inch-wide ribbon; one of 3.5 inches from a 3/8-inch-wide ribbon; and one of 4.5 inches from a 3/8-inch-wide ribbon. Any type and color of ribbon works for this project.
2. Heat-seal the ends of all three pieces of ribbon. Run the flame from a lighter across both ends of each ribbon to seal the ends and prevent fraying. Be very careful that you don't catch the ribbon, or anything else, on fire.
3. Line the alligator clip with the 4.5-inch-long ribbon. Apply hot glue to the entire length of the ribbon cut to line the alligator clip. Place one end of the ribbon to the direct underside of the alligator clip. Run it around and over the top of the clip, with the other end of the ribbon folding neatly to the bottom of the clip.
4. Lay the piece of ribbon cut for the bow--the 35-inch-long ribbon--down flat.
5. Fold the left side of the ribbon over to the middle of the ribbon.
6. Fold the right side of the ribbon over to the left until you have a "figure 8" when you pinch the ribbon in the middle. These are the loops of the bow, one on each side.
7. Push a pin through the middle section of the ribbon, where you are holding it in place.
8. Separate the loops. You should start to see an "X" shape. From here, you can continue to spread the loops as far as you want until you achieve the desired shape.
9. Put the threaded needle through the center of the bow, across where you have the pin poking through. Work in a weaving pattern, going in and out of the fabric for the most secure hold. When the needle comes out of the top of the bow, pull it tightly to create a pinched look.
10. Wrap thread around the center of the bow several times, and cut the thread off the needle.
11. Tie a knot in the thread at the back of the bow so it will not be noticeable once the bow is finished. Move the loops of the bow around as needed, to ensure the bow looks centered.
12. Tie a knot in the center of the 3.5-inch-long ribbon.
13. Glue the back of this knot directly onto the center of the front of the bow with your hot glue gun. Hold for a few seconds before letting go, to ensure it adheres securely.
14. Glue the top of the alligator clip to the back of the bow. The clip should lie flat horizontally against the back of the bow.
15. Open the alligator clip, and glue the top and bottom pieces of ribbon on the knotted piece to the back of the bow. The pieces should fold over and fit neatly against the back of the bow, over the lined top of the alligator clip. Your bow is now finished, and you can move it around to shape it as you like.
