Facial hair is rarer in anime than in real life, perhaps because so many anime series focus on teenagers unable to grow facial hair. Because of this, giving facial hair to a character makes him stand out and signifies much about his personality. Before adding facial hair, you may wish to look at other examples of facial hair on anime characters to determine what message facial hair will convey to the audience.
Instructions
1. Draw a face for your anime character. Start with the shape of the head, an oval that comes to a point around the chin, then add large eyes and a dainty nose.
2. Determine the facial hair you would wish to add. Beards and mustaches are the most common facial hair and may be found alone or together. Typically, facial hair is found on older characters. The more hair, the older the character. A mustache may signify a character that is silly, masculine or even devious; a goatee signifies that a character is artistic but pretentious; while a bear signifies that a character is rugged or distinguished.
3. Draw the outline of a mustache, if you wish to add one. Draw the middle of the mustache just over the lip and move a line down and out to create the slanted look of a mustache. Draw the bottom just under the top of the mustache to make its thickness somewhere between the thickness of one and two lips.
4. Place your pencil on the tip of the chin. Draw a short line to the end of the beard. Draw a line from the end of the beard to the outside of the chin and add another beard on the other side to create a symmetrical beard.
