Boutique-style hair bows can be made from any width of ribbon and as many stacks of ribbon has you desire to create different-looking hair accessories to match any ensemble. This style of hair bow is characterized by four loops of ribbon meeting in the center and is created from one long piece of ribbon. As an alternative, you may stack two boutique bows on top of one another to create a different look or place an embellishment over the center to create a theme to the bow.
Instructions
Basic Boutique Bow
1. Cut an 8-inch length of ribbon and orient it horizontally on your work surface. Match the two ends and press the center fold to create a visible crease. Heat-seal the two cut ends by waving each over the open flame of a lighter just enough to melt the ribbon slightly and prevent fraying.
2. Cut a length of approximately 12 inches of thread and press one end of the thread through the eye of a sewing needle. Any excess thread is trimmed after use.
3. Lay the ribbon back down again horizontally and press your index finger on one end. Slide the ribbon end up to the center and lay that end over the center crease. Keep your finger on it to keep it secure while repeating the sliding action down to the center. You should see a ribbon figure eight.
4. Hold the two ribbon ends in the center with one finger and bring the center of the right loop to the middle ribbon crease and hold it over the two stacked ribbon ends. Repeat with the other center of the ribbon loop. The form should now look like a boutique-style hair bow.
5. Create another bow form using a thinner ribbon that is approximately 6 inches long and repeat the bow-making process. Hot-glue or sew the two centers of the bows together as an alternative to a traditional boutique bow, which makes it fuller and can add a second color.
6. Hot-glue a decorative button or beads to the center of the bow and glue the center back to an alligator clip. Another option is to tie 4 inches of ribbon into a loose knot, hot-glue the back of the knot into the center of the bow, wrap and glue the ends around to the back and insert a ponytail holder between them.
