Pinwheel bows, named so because of their four loops that fan out in a pinwheel shape, add a pop of color to an otherwise plain hairstyle. Boutiques, beauty supply stores and hair salons sell these bows in a variety of colors and sizes, but for the price of one or two store-bought pinwheel bows, you can easily make at least half a dozen. The wide selection of ribbon at fabric and craft stores also allows you to create the bows in an even larger assortment than stores offer, so you can craft a bow to match all your daughter's outfits and for special occasions.
Instructions
1. Cut an 18-inch-long piece of 1-inch-wide grosgrain ribbon. Cut a 3-inch square of cardboard. Position the ribbon against the back of the cardboard so 1 inch of ribbon hangs below the bottom edge of the cardboard.
2. Fold the ribbon over the top edge of the cardboard, and bring it down the front of the square. Fold the ribbon over the bottom edge of the cardboard next to the 1-inch tail, and bring it up the back. Fold the ribbon over the top edge of the cardboard next to the first fold. Bring it down the front of the square, and fold it over the bottom edge next to the first fold. Bring the ribbon up the back one last time.
3. Slide the ribbon off the cardboard square keeping the position of the wraps as you do. Pinch the center of the wraps together to form a bow shape. Wrap 24-gauge wire around the pinched center five times. Cut the wire from the spool, and twist the ends together.
4. Cut a 6-inch length of 1/2-inch wide ribbon. Tie a knot in the center of the ribbon. Attach the knot to the front of the bow in the center with a dot of hot glue.
5. Open an alligator clip, and slide the top arm of the clip under the wire in the back of the bow, centering the wire along the clip's length. Wrap the tails of the center ribbon around to the back of the bow. Trim the tails so they overlap 1/2 inch. Secure the overlapping ribbon with a dot of hot glue on the underside of the clip's top arm.
6. Fold the tails of the bow in half length-wise. Cut them at a 45-degree angle slanting down from the folded edge. Heat seal the tails by bringing them close to the flame of the lighter long enough for them to begin to melt.
